Faulty LCD screen (BIOS chip probably telling OS that LCD is fine, hence black screen on both LCD and external monitor)
Problem description + probable cause
Boots, LCD black with faint backlight, but able to hear Windows boot up sound. External monitor only displays when in BIOS, but signal disconnects once boot into Windows. When disconnect LCD from laptop, external monitor display Windows properly.
