What did you do to repair it?
Booted from installed recovery partition showed error, so ran diskutil from command line, listed error but did not repaired. Download MacOS Catalina to USB stick, rebooted to USB install ran diskutil from command line, able to fix disk. Rebooted now running. Owner had been planning to smash screen to access hard disk in order then destroy hard disk so private information was not exposed.

Do you have any suggestions for other repairers of this (or similar) product?
Even if the owner says they have been to professional repairers, check the simple things first, in this case boot while holding down Option or Command R to see if it is still able to boot at all, then follow rigorous root cause analysis process.
