I opened the unit and fired up the motor to see what was going on. There were a lot of sparks and smoke coming from the brushes. There is plenty of life left in the bushes and the armature seemed fine. So I suspect the coil may be shorting near the bushes. The cusmoter was happy that we both agreed that the motor was beyond economical repair. We found a replacement motor online, customer is happy to get a replacement motor and install himself and use it as a garage/spare vacuum cleaner. I advised to bring it back to us if he has issues with installing the new motor. I am closing the repair for now. We can reopen if the customer comes back in.
