What did you do to repair it?
Removed read wheel and bearing case. Applied copious quantity of chainsaw oil, thick and skicky (in absence of grease) and tightened to allow small amount of play at rim. Noticed deformity in spindle.
Tested and noise has abated. The gears didn't slip when I rode it but might under greater strain they might.
Suggest leaning bike flat on the ground and regularly oiling the bearings.
